Could black jaguars still roam Texas?
Reports of black panthers, mysterious big cats and possible jaguar sightings have circulated throughout Texas for generations. Most leave behind little more than an eyewitness story, but some accounts are much harder to dismiss.

A Black Cat That Shouldn’t Be There
Black jaguars are real. Melanism can produce jaguars that appear almost completely black, although their characteristic rosette pattern can often still be seen under the right lighting.
But putting one in Texas presents a major problem. While jaguars historically occurred in Texas and an occasional wandering animal from Mexico is biologically possible, melanistic jaguars are associated with areas much farther south.
That makes Cleaver’s account particularly intriguing.
He wasn’t simply reporting a dark shape disappearing into the brush. As an experienced outdoorsman, he describes a large black feline whose size, build and appearance didn’t match the wildlife he was accustomed to seeing.
The Texas Black Panther Mystery
For generations, Texans have reported large black cats crossing rural roads, moving along creek bottoms and disappearing into thick cover. Similar “black panther” stories are deeply rooted across the South.
There are plenty of possible explanations for some of these sightings. Animals can be badly misjudged in poor light, and familiar species can look surprisingly unfamiliar when seen for only a few seconds. There is also no scientifically documented population of melanistic mountain lions.
But jaguars are different because they actually are part of Texas wildlife history.
That doesn’t prove a black jaguar was responsible for Cleaver’s encounter. There is no photograph, DNA or other physical evidence that could establish exactly what he saw. It does, however, make the encounter worth examining rather than simply dismissing.
In this episode, Moore and Cleaver dig into the sighting, the history of jaguars in Texas and the larger mystery surrounding reports of black panthers and other unexplained big cats.
Jaguars once roamed Texas. Whether one of their darkest forms could ever return is another question entirely. For now, the black ghost remains just that—a mystery.
