The Gulf has experienced tsunamis before, and scientists agree they could happen again. While these events are exceptionally rare, geological evidence shows that massive underwater landslides, earthquakes, meteor impacts, and even volcanic activity have generated destructive waves in and around the Gulf over thousands of years. One prehistoric event may have produced waves hundreds of feet high.

Investigation Summary
The Gulf of Mexico is generally considered one of the world’s calmer ocean basins, but that doesn’t mean it’s immune to tsunamis.
This episode examines documented historical events, prehistoric evidence, and current scientific research into tsunami hazards affecting the Gulf Coast. While the likelihood of experiencing a devastating tsunami remains extremely low, understanding the region’s geological history provides valuable insight into one of the least-discussed natural hazards facing coastal communities.
Can the Gulf of Mexico Really Produce a Tsunami?
The answer is yes.
Although the Gulf lacks the major tectonic plate boundaries responsible for many Pacific tsunamis, several mechanisms can still generate large waves.

Many people assume the Gulf of Mexico is free from threats commonly associated with the Pacific Ocean.
History says otherwise.
The Gulf has experienced hurricanes, waterspouts, dangerous marine wildlife, mysterious sea life, underwater earthquakes, and even tsunamis.
