Some of those stories involve serial killers. Others involve strange encounters deep in the woods that remain difficult to explain.

A Forest With a Dark Reputation
Millions of people have safely enjoyed the Sam Houston National Forest.
It’s home to exceptional wildlife habitat, outstanding hunting, the Lone Star Hiking Trail, and countless opportunities for outdoor adventure.
Yet like many vast wilderness areas, it has also been the backdrop for disappearances, violent crime, illegal activity, and unexplained encounters that continue to generate questions years later.
Most visitors will never experience anything unusual.
But the forest’s history reminds us that beautiful places can sometimes conceal tragic stories.
Missing Persons in East Texas

A Serial Killer Next Door

Authorities say he ultimately pleaded guilty in connection with the murder of a woman whose body was discovered inside a barrel on his property. Investigators later learned he had begun committing brutal crimes decades earlier, raising difficult questions about how long predators can sometimes operate before finally being brought to justice.
It’s a chilling reminder that some of the greatest dangers in the outdoors don’t come from wildlife.
They come from people.
