For more than two decades, one secluded stretch of marshland on Pleasure Island in Southeast Texas has been connected to one of the region’s most heartbreaking unsolved murders. Twenty-four years ago, four-year-old Dannarriah Finley disappeared from her home in Orange, Texas. Three days later, her body was discovered on Pleasure Island near Port Arthur, forever changing countless lives and leaving a family still searching for answers.

Investigation Summary
The murder of Dannarriah Finley remains one of Southeast Texas’ most painful unsolved crimes.
On July 4, 2002, the four-year-old disappeared from a family gathering in Orange, Texas. Three days later, searchers discovered her body on a remote section of Pleasure Island near Port Arthur. Despite years of investigation by the Orange Police Department, Texas Rangers and other agencies, no one has ever been brought to justice.
In this investigation, I revisit the case not to sensationalize it, but to honor Dannarriah’s memory while examining the unique role the outdoors can play in criminal investigations. Advances in forensic science, particularly DNA technology, continue to give investigators hope that this case can still be solved.
The Outdoors as a Crime Scene
When people think about outdoor dangers, they often picture severe weather or dangerous wildlife.
Far less attention is given to the reality that remote outdoor locations sometimes become crime scenes.
Marshes.
Woodlands.
Riverbanks.
Remote shorelines.
These places can complicate investigations, but they can also preserve evidence and hold answers that might not exist anywhere else.
The discovery of Dannarriah on Pleasure Island serves as a heartbreaking reminder that the outdoors can become part of a criminal investigation in unexpected ways.
A Local Connection
This case has always affected me on a deeply personal level.
I grew up in Southeast Texas and have spent countless hours fishing and exploring Pleasure Island. It has always been a place associated with family memories and time outdoors.
Knowing that such a horrific crime became part of that landscape is something I have never forgotten.
That is one reason I felt compelled to tell Dannarriah’s story and remind people that unsolved cases are not simply headlines from the past. They are tragedies that continue affecting families every single day.
Why Outdoor Enthusiasts Matter
Anglers. Birders. Kayakers. Wildlife photographers.
Anyone who regularly spends time outdoors often notices details others overlook.
An abandoned vehicle. Unusual activity. Something left behind. A person who simply doesn’t seem to belong.
These observations may seem insignificant in the moment, but they can become critically important during a criminal investigation.
One goal of this episode is to encourage everyone who enjoys the outdoors to recognize that awareness can help protect not only themselves but also others.

Cold cases are never truly cold for the families left behind.
Every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every passing year.
The questions remain.
As forensic science continues advancing, investigators have new tools that simply did not exist when Dannarriah was murdered. Cases once believed unsolvable are now being closed through DNA evidence, genealogy and other investigative breakthroughs.
