Is Hammer a Revenge Thriller? Joe Betar Says It’s More Complicated Than That
On the surface, Joe Betar’s debut thriller Hammer has all the ingredients of a classic revenge story. A former MMA champion leaves the fighting world behind to build a peaceful life in the Texas Hill Country, only to have that life shattered by forces beyond his control.
But when I interviewed Betar for Dark Outdoors, he told me that’s not really what the book is about.
“It’s not just about payback,” he said. “It’s about more than settling the score. It’s really about how Jack protects his family and protects his way of life.”
That caught my attention because there’s a big difference between revenge and protection.
The main character, Jack “Hammer” Garrett, isn’t searching for violence. In fact, he’s trying to escape it. He wants to spend time with his family, enjoy hunting and shooting, and leave the fight game behind. The conflict begins when the life he’s worked to build comes under attack.
Betar said one of the central themes of the novel is that Jack keeps facing new obstacles that force him to make difficult choices. Along the way, readers see a man wrestling with loyalty, justice, redemption and identity as much as they see gunfights and action.
To me, that’s what makes Hammer interesting. It’s not simply another thriller where the hero marches through a list of bad guys. It’s about asking a harder question: “What would you do to protect the people and way of life you love?”
That’s a theme hunters, outdoorsmen and anyone who values family can understand, whether they’ve ever picked up a thriller before or not.
